Dangerous Pity reviews

Last week (08.06.10), The Gutter Bookshop was packed with people eager to hear Paolo Tullio and Elizabeth Wassell talk about her new book, Dangerous Pity. Following the launch, the book has been received very favourably. Click here to see reviews and keep posted for pictures from the launch.

Dangerous Pity is an instantly engaging novel; the central characters mix desire, regret, grief and obsession in a heady cocktail, and the descriptions of Nice and its cultural landscape are beautifully intriguing.
"That morning, I walked down the plunging streets of vieux Nice, beside the coral-coloured houses, the cafés and socca bars, the displays of mountain ham and olives. And I bought loads of food and a bottle of vin du Var for lunch, almost as though I were expecting a visitor."

Sebastian Clare is a well-known author living in the south of France and slowly coming to terms with the death of his mother. Onto the scene arrives the impish Ursula, a former student, who quickly insinuates herself into his life. Sebastian casts his mind back to the time when he and his wife, Claudia, had taken on a driver who became a menacing presence. Ursula continues her parasitic existence in Sebastian's life until events take a dramatic turn. In Dangerous Pity, Elizabeth Wassell superbly depicts a rich cast of characters, and captures the city of Nice in all its varied moods.

Praise for Flagging the Problem:

It's that rare thing - a medical book that can be read by lay people and health professionals alike. Dr Barry demystifies subjects that touch so many of our lives and he does so with compassion, wisdom and vast professional knowledge. Cathy Kelly -author

Have you ever come across a book that fundamentally changed your understanding of a subject? Flagging the Problem: A New Approach to Mental Health is such a rarity. It is a superb book. It explains mood disturbances in a fresh and accessible way. I cannot recommend it highly enough, in particular to those travelling the lonely journey of mental illness, and their families. Irish Times

Having read Flagging the Problem, I now have a much better understanding of why Niall died. This book is written in very simple terms, exploring the complex nature of depression and suicidal tendencies. It is a 'must read' for every parent, informing them of the tell-tale warning signs of depression and suicide. John, father of Niall, who died by suicide in 2002
