Culture Club Master Class Series: Handmade Notebooks

We are delighted to announce that we are working with Camilla Fanning and, in the future more artists, to develop a series of arts and crafts workshops. In the latest event, Camilla will facilitate a class on the creation of your own handmade notebook.

Participants will learn how to make from scratch simple handmade notebooks, using simple methods and a variety of materials.  You will learn how to stitch pages together to make a notebook with a cover. Decorative methods will also be explored. The notebook is ideal for a personalised memento or gifts.

The Handmade Notebooks class will cost €60 to include materials, completed artwork and light refreshments. Please email, phone (01 905 6072/5) or message via Facebook or Twitter to register your interest for this event or our projected events.

Keep an eye on the events page for details of further classes in the series.

Culture Club Master Class: Paper and Mixed Media

Why not try for some creative activity this spring! The Culture Club will be hosting a Master Class with Dublin-based artist Camilla Fanning. Camilla will be facilitating a specialised workshop, in which participants will be encouraged to explore their creative side with a range of media, looking at the potential for using up-cycled and found materials. Don't worry if you lack drawing skills as this class is based on using cut-out and collage techniques.

The cost of €60 for this three hour workshop, includes all materials, completed designs to take home and light refreshments.

'In this workshop, we will look at the possibilities of using a variety of rescued and found materials that can be collaged and combined. We will learn to arrange and layer colours and textures to embellish your work. We will use layers and textures of fabrics, papers, jewellery and buttons, custom made papers, old letters, maps and photos, tiny found objects and stitching. Do you have something at home you would like to incorporate - maybe from a special event? Bring these with you and they can become part of your design too!'

For further information from Camilla Fanning about the course: info@irishetchings.com

Payment may be made in person via Liberties Upstairs Bookshop (Regret no card facilities). Cheques may be made payable to Camilla Fanning.

About Camilla

I am an Irish artist based in Dublin working primarily as a printmaker.  My primary medium is classical fine art etching.  My practice also includes digital arts, (soundscape, animation and video), assemblage and life drawing. I aspire to making an ArtBot. A recurrent theme of my work is collective memory and shared imaginings, often taking the form of landscapes. In assemblages, I consider delusions and insecurities, often referencing games. I have an ongoing interest in the social and cultural impacts of all things digital and cyber, and I blog about these as well as giving the occasional seminar talk.

Have a Cuppa for Daisyhouse

#HaveACuppa

You are invited to come along to Liberties Upstairs for a 'cuppa' in aid of Daisyhouse: 'supporting women out of homelessness' on Saturday morning, after our usual book club meeting. The #HaveACuppa campaign was recently launched by Claire Byrne, who is an ambassador for the charity (see link).

Come along for a tea or coffee and a bookish chat and help a good cause into the bargain. Drop us a line on libertiesupstairs@gmail.com if you can make it, so we have an idea of numbers. If you can't make the event, you can still support the initiative by texting DAISYHOUSE to 50300 to donate €4.

Culture Club Event: Upcycling by Design: Creating Heirlooms for the Future

 Creative ideas...

Creative ideas...

Lynn Haughton founder of The Upcycle Movement will talk about using handcraft skills to reuse/remake old and shabby articles into something beautiful to love and keep; preserving traditional skills for the future.

Lynn says:

Upcycling may be a relatively new term but it is not a new concept - it simply got lost in modern day consumerism, convenience & society's throw away mindset. To upcycle something is simply to re-purpose something that would otherwise be considered waste & to 'up' its value and quality by doing so. The difference between upcycling and recycling is that when you recycle something - generally the components are broken down and the result is an item of lesser quality eg: recycled paper....I have been living, breathing and dreaming about The Upcycle Movement organisation and the opportunities that I hope it will create - the doors it may open, the waste solutions, and the ideas & designs it may inspire.

We are proud to announce that this event is an official Heritage Week activity . Please check out the Heritage Week page for many more events and activities.

This event will be at the special price of €4 and booking is advised so that we can be sure of numbers. Just follow the link to book using our online shop (Tickets category) or call into the shop to buy a ticket.

Culture Club Event: The Publishing Process from the Inside

The next Upstairs Culture Club session will be held in the bookshop on Thursday 30 July at 7.30pm. Our publisher and MD, Seán O'Keeffe will be talking about the publishing process as experienced from the inside. He will be discussing publishing in general and talking about the dynamics of Liberties Press in particular. If you want to know how the whole process works and whether there really is such an animal as the 'Slush Pile' then this is your chance to find out.

For any writers deciding whether to opt for the traditional publishing approach or venture the self-publishing route, the talk will give you plenty of food for thought. The evening will however also be of interest to curious readers who simply want to get some idea of how a book makes it into their hands. There will be an opportunity for questions and discussion after
Seán's presentation.

The session will cost 5.00 (pre-booked) to include a glass of wine. Tickets at the door will be €6.00. Booking will be through our online shop (choose the Tickets category) or in person at the shop.

Attendees may redeem their ticket price against purchase of a Liberties Press title on the night.
