This past Thursday at the lavish LightHouse Cinema; friends, fans and colleagues came together to support author John Boorman with the release of his debut novel Crime of Passion. This being my first book launch, I thought I wouldn't have the time or opportunity to get a chance to speak with Mr. Boorman but much to my surprise I had the honor of having dinner with him just hours before his big night. It was a casual meal where I was lucky enough to chat with him about his book, some recent filming projects, and the role music plays in motion pictures. Only an hour later I had to leave the meal to enter the cinema to get ready for special guest Brendan Gleeson and the other 100 of his friends and fans.
As people herded into the theater like bovines into a barn, they make their way to the free wine followed by the table where I was helping sell copies of the book. I was being bombarded by the amount of people wanting a copy or two of his book. One man even came to buy ten copies to hand out!
The speeches soon started leading off with the head publisher of Liberties Press, Sean O'Keeffe. It seemed that he had an almost personal connection with John, stating in the speech how he approached him about publishing on of his books.
From there the microphone was passed to actor Brendan Gleeson who is a good friend of John Boorman, starring several of his films. Brendan stated "I love this book" and that it is "Terribly funny and incredibly honest" From there John Boorman was next to speak where he made a short sincere speech where he looked to our publisher and stated "what happens now?"
After his speech he made his way to the book signing table while loads of people rushed the table to buy a book for the famous director to sign. After selling books and holding the flashlight for Mr. Boorman for around an hour the people finished there drinks and began to head home to start their newest novel to add to there collection.
